Pétanque in California
Thirteen FPUSA clubs, a quarter of every member club in the country. The Bay Area is, by the federation’s own reckoning, the densest concentration of pétanque in the United States.
California holds thirteen of the 52 FPUSA clubs in the country, a quarter of the national total. Nine are in the north and four in the south.
The Bay Area is, in the federation’s own words, the area with the highest density of pétanque clubs in the United States.

Nine clubs
Northern California
Nine FPUSA clubs run from the Mendocino coast down through the Bay Area to the Sacramento Valley.
Six of them sit within about an hour of San Francisco, and two share the Mather Sports Center in Rancho Cordova. Our Northern California wine country page lists all nine with venues, schedules and the 2026 tournament circuit.
Four clubs
Southern California and the Valley
Four of the Southwest region’s FPUSA clubs are in California: Los Angeles, San Diego, Fresno and Oakhurst. Outside the clubs, the Parker Palm Springs hotel has two pétanque courts, open to registered guests only.
Los Angeles
Pétanque in Los Angeles
Los Angeles Pétanque Club plays on lighted courts at Rancho Park, beside the Cheviot Hills Recreation Center. Sessions run Monday and Thursday from 3pm to 8pm and Saturday from 9:30am to 5pm.
Founded in 1983, it is the largest of the four southern clubs and the easiest to walk into.
San Diego
Pétanque in San Diego
Club de Pétanque San Diego plays in Balboa Park. It publishes a dated month-by-month calendar rather than fixed weekly times, plus some Friday evenings at 7pm.
Central Valley
Pétanque in Fresno and the Central Valley
Fresno Pétanque Club plays at Cary Park, 4750 North Fresno Street. It hosted three FPUSA tournament weekends in 2026, including the Men’s Doubles World Championship Qualifier in May.
Oakhurst Pétanque Club plays in the Sierra foothills, about fourteen miles from the south entrance to Yosemite.
Beyond California
Nevada, Arizona and Utah
The FPUSA Southwest region runs past the state line, and three cities next door have regular play.
The Pétanque Club of Las Vegas plays at Lone Mountain Regional Park, 9825 West Lone Mountain Road, and gives lessons to newcomers. Its Viva Las Vegas International Open reached its fifth edition in November 2025, and a sixth is planned for 2027.
Membership runs through the FPUSA license, $27 a year for adults and $20 for juniors, and two existing members introduce each new one. Session days change with the season, so check the club’s schedule before going.
In Arizona, the Tucson Petanque Club plays Sundays and Tuesdays at Brandi Fenton Memorial Park and Thursdays at Harold Bell Wright Park. It is free, with no membership list or dues, and lends boules to first-timers.
Start times follow the heat: 8am in the warm months, 9am from October. A sister group in Oro Valley plays at Kriegh Park.
In Utah, the Salt Lake City Pétanque Club plays Sunday afternoons, weather permitting, beside the city library on 300 East between 400 and 500 South. It posts updates on Facebook, so confirm there before driving in.

Where to start
In the south
Los Angeles Pétanque Club at Rancho Park, beside the Cheviot Hills Recreation Center. Monday and Thursday from 3pm to 8pm and Saturday 9:30am to 5pm, on lighted courts.
The club has been there since 1983 and is used to people turning up knowing nothing.
In the north
Valley of the Moon at Depot Park in Sonoma plays 365 days a year, weather permitting, gathering most days at 2pm and at 1pm through winter.
La Pétanque Marinière in San Rafael runs free introductory sessions on the third Saturday of each month from April to October.
What to bring
Closed-toe shoes and nothing else. Clubs lend boules to anyone arriving for the first time, and the rules take about five minutes to pick up.
When you want your own set, the boule selector turns hand size and playing style into a specification.
A correction
The oldest club question
La Boule d’Or in San Francisco is often called the first pétanque club in the United States. It is the second.
What is true
La Boule d’Or was founded in San Francisco in 1959 by Jean Bontemps, an importer from Provence, and it plays in Golden Gate Park to this day. It is the oldest club on the West Coast.
The following year it hosted an international tournament on its home terrain, with players from Quebec, France and Tunisia.
What is not
The oldest pétanque club in the country was Le Mistral in Worcester, Massachusetts, founded in 1958 by French expatriates and covered in our New England page. La Boule d’Or’s own club page describes itself as the second oldest.
San Francisco Recreation and Parks says the same of the court itself: second oldest in the country, first on the West Coast.
Common questions
Questions about pétanque in California
How many pétanque clubs does California have?
Thirteen on the FPUSA roster, which is a quarter of the 52 member clubs in the country. Nine sit in the Northern California region and four in the Southwest region.
No other state comes close. Florida is second with nine of the Southeast region’s eleven.
Which is the oldest club in California?
La Boule d’Or in San Francisco, founded in 1959 and playing in Golden Gate Park. It is the oldest club on the West Coast.
It is the second oldest in the country, not the first. Le Mistral in Worcester, Massachusetts predates it by a year, and La Boule d’Or’s own club page says so.
Where is the densest pétanque in the state?
The San Francisco Bay Area, which FPUSA calls the area with the highest density of clubs in the United States.
Within about an hour of the city you can reach San Francisco, San Rafael, Lafayette, Petaluma, Santa Rosa and Sonoma.
Where should a beginner start?
Los Angeles Pétanque Club if you are in the south, with lighted courts and long open hours at Rancho Park. Valley of the Moon in Sonoma if you are north, since it plays every day of the year.
Both lend boules and neither expects you to know the rules.
Is there pétanque in Sacramento?
Yes, and two clubs share the same venue. Le Club Français de Sacramento plays Thursday and Sunday at Mather Sports Center, and Sactown Pétanque plays Saturdays at the same courts plus Florin Creek Park.
Sactown formed in January 2022, founded mostly by players from Sacramento’s Hmong community who had met through the older club.
Do I need to own boules?
No. Most California clubs lend sets to anyone arriving for the first time, and several run free introductory sessions.
La Pétanque Marinière runs free intro sessions on the third Saturday of the month from April to October.
What should I wear?
Closed-toe shoes. Terrain is gravel or decomposed granite and boules are heavy metal, so sandals are a bad idea anywhere.
Flat soles work best. Nothing else about the game needs special kit.
What tournaments run in California?
A lot. The 2026 national singles and mixed triples championships were at Sactown in April. Fresno hosted the Men’s Doubles World Championship Qualifier in May, plus Southwest regionals in February and September.
Seven NorCal regional events run from June to November, and five of them are still to come.
Our events page carries the calendar.
How do I join a club?
Turn up during a scheduled session first. Nearly every club here welcomes newcomers before any membership question comes up.
Dues vary by club. Lamorinda charges $60 a year for an adult and $10 for juniors, which is typical.

Other American regions
