Sanctioned tournaments in the US, Canada and Mexico
Each country has its own federation, and each federation sanctions its own tournaments: regionals, national championships and qualifiers for the World Championships. Most of them ask for a federation membership. Club opens are listed in the calendar above; in the US and Mexico they don’t require a federation membership.
Federation of Pétanque USA (FPUSA)
FPUSA sanctions three levels: regionals, national championships and World Championship qualifiers. Pre-registration is required for all three, and the deadline falls at least one week before the event. Entry is $35 per player for regionals, $50 for nationals and $65 for qualifiers.
Who can play: regionals are open to FPUSA members, plus at most one player per team licensed in another FIPJP federation who is an associate member of an FPUSA club. Nationals and qualifiers require an FPUSA license, and qualifier teams are made of US citizens, with at most one permanent resident (green card holder) per team. Pétanque Canada and Pétanque Québec
Pétanque Canada runs the Canadian championships: triples, mixed and junior in 2026. For the triples and mixed championships, you need a Pétanque Canada membership before you pre-register.
In Québec, Pétanque Québec sanctions the Méritas circuit: each tournament gives points to the best finishers, and the Canadian championship gives the most (19 points to the champions, against 15 at other tournaments). Sources: Pétanque Canada and Pétanque Québec.

Federación Mexicana de Petanca
The Federación Mexicana de Petanca sets the rules for three levels: regionals, national championships and qualifiers. All three require a federation affiliation card. Affiliated players from other countries can enter regionals and nationals, but not qualifiers. Opens set their own rules and accept players without an affiliation.
