Pétanque in Ottawa-Gatineau
Free play twice a week in Ottawa with no membership and boules lent on arrival. Across the river, a club of more than 500 moves about 100 winter players into a library basement that holds 24 at a time.

One metro area, two provinces and three clubs on either side of the Ottawa River. Gatineau has the only federated club in the Outaouais, with more than 500 members in summer.
Play on the Ottawa side is free and needs no membership at all.

Three clubs, one river
The three clubs
Federation status matters mostly for sanctioned tournaments. Pétanque Ottawa-Vanier asks for no membership at all and lends boules to newcomers who arrive without a set.
| Club | Where | Status | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Association de la Pétanque de Gatineau | Gatineau, secteur Hull | Federated | Founded 1986. More than 500 members play in city parks through summer, dropping to about 100 indoors in winter |
| Pétanque Ottawa-Vanier | Vanier, Ottawa | Not federated | Free, volunteer-run, playing Tuesdays and Fridays at 7pm on a floodlit terrain in Richelieu Park |
| Club de pétanque d’Aylmer | Gatineau, secteur Aylmer | Not on the current registry | Founded 1982 by its own account. Its website posted a COVID suspension in 2020 and nothing since, so confirm before traveling |
Our club directory carries the full national listing, and the public courts page covers free terrain.
Free, twice a week
Playing in Ottawa
Pétanque Ottawa-Vanier is the simplest place to start anywhere on this page. No fee, no form, no equipment needed.
Where and when
The terrain is at 300 avenue des Pères Blancs in Richelieu Park, next to the Sugar Shack, floodlit and with free parking. OC Transpo route 20 serves it.
Tuesdays and Fridays at 7pm, roughly May through October. Games run several a night and rarely go past 11pm.
Which night to pick
Tuesday is purely recreational and the night the club points newcomers to. Friday is the league evening and more competitive.
Play runs mainly in French, with enough bilingual regulars to bring anglophone players in without difficulty.
What it costs
Nothing. The club says outright that there are no subscription or membership costs, and it lends spare boules to anyone arriving without.
There are no washrooms on the terrain itself, though the community center at the same address has them.
A naming point. The club goes by three names: Pétanque Ottawa-Vanier, the Ottawa-Vanier Petanque Club and the Vanier Petanque Club.
They are one organization on one terrain, which is worth knowing when searching for it.
500 members, 24 places
Gatineau and the boulodrome campaign
The Association de la Pétanque de Gatineau has been going since 1986 and has outgrown everywhere it can play in winter.
Summer and winter
More than 500 members play in Gatineau city parks from spring through autumn, and it is the only federated club in the Outaouais.
In winter the number drops to about 100, because the only indoor space is the basement of the Bibliothèque Lucien-Lalonde at 225 rue Berri.
The problem with the basement
It holds no more than 24 players at a time, is reached by steep stairs and has poor air quality. Some of the club’s players live with a disability, and the stairs alone keep people out.
The campaign
In March 2025 around forty players took a 1,000-name petition to city council, with support letters from the Amicale des handicapés physiques de l’Outaouais, the Fédération des aînés de l’Outaouais and Loisir Sport Outaouais.
The club wants the ground floor of the centre multisport de la Fonderie on rue Montcalm: step-free, central, needing only ventilation work, and it is asking for about a fifth of the space.
The arena proposal
In March 2025 councillor Denis Girouard proposed converting one of the closed municipal arenas instead, estimating ten or eleven courts would fit. The club called that a plan B, given how uncertain the arenas’ future was.
Girouard left council after the November 2025 election, and no city decision on a boulodrome had been reported up to September 2026.
