Pétanque for team building and client events

Pétanque works for company events because nobody needs to be athletic and a first-timer can score a point in the first game. Players spend most of the game standing together at the jack, which leaves plenty of time to talk.

Below is how to size the event, run a format where nobody sits out and teach the game in ten minutes.

Why it suits mixed groups

The throw is underhand and short, so age and fitness matter far less than in most outdoor games. People with limited mobility can play; the rules even allow a wheelchair player to throw with one wheel inside the circle.

The game rewards calm and judgment over strength. That balance means a new hire and a senior partner can win a round together.

  • No athletic background needed
  • Played outdoors on gravel, dirt or a park path
  • Short games that fit a two-hour window
  • A French culture angle for client hosting

Plan the session

Space and courts

Each court hosts one game: four players in doubles or six in triples. Divide your headcount to get the court count, then add one spare court for practice.

Any firm surface works, from a gravel lot to a hard dirt path. Soft lawn slows boules down but is fine for a casual afternoon.

Boules and gear

Plan one set of boules per player plus a few spares. Our best beginner sets covers affordable options if you want to buy rather than rent.

  • A jack for each court
  • A measure for close points
  • Rope or chalk to mark lanes
  • Score sheets and a whiteboard for standings

Timing

Two hours is a comfortable length: 15 minutes to teach, 90 minutes of play and 15 minutes for awards. Start late in the afternoon so the event ends the workday.

Name a rain date or an indoor backup when you send the invitation. Light rain is playable; lightning is not.

A two-hour session on that plan runs like this.

0:00Ten-minute teach on one court, boules handed out
0:15Round one, partners drawn at random
0:35Round two, new partners
0:55Round three, new partners

1:45Awards for the top three players

What to tell a venue when booking

Send a venue these five details when you ask for a quote. Ask for the all-in price, including any service charge or food and drink minimum.

  • Headcount and how many will play at once
  • Date, start time and how long you need the courts
  • Instruction, if you want staff to teach the group
  • Food and drink during play or afterward
  • Anything the format needs: a scoreboard, a microphone or a printed bracket

A format that keeps everyone playing

Rotating doubles

Pair people at random and change partners every round. Each game runs to 7 points or 20 minutes, whichever comes first, so rotations stay on time.

Track individual points won across rounds instead of team wins. The top three players get prizes; everyone has met four or five colleagues.

Side challenges

Keep a practice court open for anyone waiting. Short contests give quieter guests a moment in the spotlight:

  • Closest boule to the jack from 8 m
  • Most boules within a hoop in five throws
  • Best lob that stops within 1 m of the jack

Hosting clients

For client events, keep the competition light and the hospitality generous. Rosé from Provence, bread and cheese fit the theme and stay out of the way of throwing hands.

Teach a few French terms: a “carreau” is a shot that knocks an opponent’s boule away while yours stops in its place. Our pétanque glossary lists more.

Teach it in ten minutes

A local club player makes the best instructor. Find one through our club directory or the FPUSA regions and clubs page.

What to cover

  1. Throw the jack 6 to 10 m from the circle
  2. Feet stay inside the circle until the boule lands
  3. The team that is not closest throws next
  4. After all boules are thrown, the closest team scores one point per boule nearer than the other team’s best

That is enough to play; hand out a printout of the rules for anyone curious. Send guests the history of pétanque ahead of the day.

Frequently asked questions

How many people can play pétanque at a corporate event?

Any number, with one court for every four players in doubles or six in triples. Forty-eight guests need eight courts for triples.

Do guests need any experience?

No. The throw takes a few minutes to learn and first-timers score points in their first game.

How long should a team-building pétanque event last?

About two hours: a short lesson, 90 minutes of rotating games and a quick awards moment.

What if it rains?

Light rain does not stop play on gravel. Name a rain date or indoor backup for storms.
