5 federated clubs
The five clubs
Baja California holds the largest cluster of federated clubs in Mexico outside the capital. Player counts below come from the federation’s 2026 affiliation registry.
| Club | Area | Players | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lunes de Petank | El Sauzal | 17 | The founding club, playing near Playa San Miguel since the late 2000s. Hosts the Torneo Abierto Mexicano every May |
| +Petanca | Tercer Ayuntamiento | 17 | Level with Lunes de Petank as the largest club in the Norte region, based on Calle Alisos. Runs the Open +Petanca each September |
| Chanté | Central Ensenada | 8 | Stages the Abierto Mexicano at Rancho del Dragón on the Ruta del Vino |
| Petanca Valle | Valle de Guadalupe | 8 | Founded 2020 and based at Vinos Cruz, the one club sitting inside the wine valley itself |
| BLC | Ensenada | 6 | A small city club with its own sidewalk court, reachable through Instagram at blc_petanca |
Affiliation decides who can enter sanctioned tournaments and nothing else. Every venue in the next section will let you turn up and play.

From the border
Getting here from San Diego
The drive
Cross at San Ysidro or Otay Mesa and follow Highway 1D, the coastal toll road, south through Rosarito. Central Ensenada is about 90 minutes from the border.
The Valle de Guadalupe sits another 20 to 30 minutes inland on Highway 3. Rancho del Dragón and the valley venues are all on that stretch.
What you need
A US passport or passport card for the return crossing, and Mexican auto insurance bought before you leave. US policies do not cover you south of the border.
Nothing about pétanque here requires Spanish. The clubs are used to players arriving from Southern California.
Background
How the federation started here
Two things put pétanque in Ensenada: the wine trade in the valley and a border 90 minutes north.
The valley connection
French winegrowers working in the Valle de Guadalupe brought the game with them, and players based in Southern California came down to join in. Lunes de Petank grew out of that mix near Playa San Miguel in El Sauzal.
The club’s annual tournament reached its seventeenth edition in 2026, which puts the first one around 2008.
From one club to a federation
The Federación Mexicana de Petanca was registered in January 2011 and joined the FIPJP the same year. Lunes de Petank was its only member club at the time.
David Martínez Garza, the federation’s first president, still runs the May tournament out of Ensenada.
The public courts
For its first decade the sport here had no public home. Parque Revolución changed that in July 2022, giving Baja California its first courts open to anyone.
Five federated clubs now operate between the city and the valley, holding 56 of the 297 players on the national registry.
Common questions
Questions about pétanque in Ensenada
Where can I play pétanque in Ensenada without joining a club?
Parque Revolución, in the center of the city. It opened in July 2022 as the first publicly accessible pétanque courts in Baja California and costs nothing to use.
Bring your own boules, since the park lends none. Our public courts directory lists the rest of the free terrain across the three countries.
Is Ensenada where Mexican pétanque started?
The federation says so on its own history page, crediting the city’s proximity to the border for bringing in French-origin players based in the United States.
Lunes de Petank was playing near Playa San Miguel in El Sauzal through the late 2000s, and the national federation took shape from there in 2011.
Which Ensenada venue has the most courts?
Rancho del Dragón, on the Ruta del Vino, with fourteen courts and six of them lit. That makes it the largest pétanque venue found anywhere in Mexico.
Courts there are open at any hour, and the ranch hosts the Abierto Mexicano staged by the Chanté club.
What is the Open +Petanca?
A doubles tournament run every September by Club +Petanca on Playa Hermosa, with the municipal sports institute as co-organizer. The 2026 edition is the third.
The 2023 running drew 64 pairs, with entry at 2,200 pesos per pair and 1,000 US dollars for first place. Prize money and field size change year to year, so check with the organizers before entering.
How do I get to Ensenada from San Diego?
Cross at San Ysidro or Otay Mesa and take Highway 1D south along the coast. Central Ensenada is roughly 90 minutes from the border, and the Valle de Guadalupe another 20 to 30 minutes inland.
A US passport or passport card is required, and Mexican auto insurance has to be bought before you cross.
How many federated clubs does Ensenada have?
Five: Lunes de Petank, +Petanca, Chanté, Petanca Valle and BLC. Between them they hold 56 of the 297 players on the national registry for 2026.
That makes Baja California second for club count in the country, behind Mexico City with six.
When is the season?
Year-round. The Mediterranean climate on this coast supports play in every month, and neither tournament falls in winter.
March through October is the busiest stretch, with the Abierto Mexicano in May and the Open +Petanca in September.
