Guadalajara has the most accessible pétanque in Mexico. Four free sessions a week in public parks, no membership and loaner boules for anyone who turns up.
The scene started in December 2018 when a group rehabilitated a court that had been abandoned for years.

Free play, four times a week
Petanclub GDL runs every session below in a public park. All four are free and none require you to join anything.
| When | Where | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday, 7pm | Parque Monterrey | Free | The main session, and the easiest one to walk into |
| Wednesday, 7pm | Parque Ciudades Hermanas | Free | Quieter than the Monterrey nights |
| Thursday, 7pm | Parque Monterrey | Free | The second main session of the week |
| Saturday, 9am | Parque Monterrey | Free | Training and technique rather than casual games |
The simplest way to start. Show up at Parque Monterrey on a Monday or Thursday evening and say it is your first time.
Boules get handed to you and somebody will explain the game as you play. Reading the rules beforehand helps but is not expected.

The clubs
Two clubs sit in Guadalajara itself. Player counts come from the federation’s 2026 affiliation registry.
| Club | Where | Players | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petanca Providencia México | Colonia Providencia | 14 | The larger of the two city clubs on the 2026 registry. Reachable through Instagram at petancaprovidencia |
| Petanclub GDL | Parque Monterrey | 13 | Founded December 2018 by Sebastián Cecillón, now the national federation’s secretary. Runs the free park sessions |
| Club de Petanca Zapotlán | Ciudad Guzmán | 10 | Two hours south, playing at the Unidad Deportiva Roberto Espinoza Guzmán |
| Bolas Saladas | Puerto Vallarta | 11 | On the coast, and host of the Open Puerto Vallarta each January |
Petanca Providencia México plays in Colonia Providencia. Contact the club directly through Instagram for its current venue and schedule, since neither is published.
Terrain
Where the courts are
Three sets of public courts in the city, plus a long-running group an hour south at Lake Chapala.
| Venue | Where | Access | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parque Monterrey | Guadalajara | Free, open park hours | Decomposed granite courts rescued from disuse when the club formed. The center of play in the city |
| Parque Ciudades Hermanas | Guadalajara | Free, open park hours | The Wednesday venue, on the same decomposed granite surface |
| Jardines del Bosque | Guadalajara | Free, open park hours | Two courts added in December 2022, built to the same dimensions as Parque Monterrey with lighting and benches |
| Place de la Pétanque | Ajijic, Lake Chapala | Free | About an hour south, where a group of foreign residents plays Monday and Wednesday mornings |
All the city terrain is free and unstaffed, open whenever the park is. Nothing lends boules outside the club sessions, so bring your own if you are going at another time.
One of Mexico’s five OPENs
The Abierto Charro
July, free doubles
The Abierto Charro de Petanca is Guadalajara’s international OPEN, one of five on the federation calendar. Petanclub GDL organizes it and the 2026 running was the fourth edition.
Entry is through [email protected]. The rest of the national calendar sits on the events page.
The wider region
Bolas Saladas runs the Open Puerto Vallarta each January, which is the other Occidente event on the national calendar.
Both are free doubles formats, which suits players who have not built a regular triples team.
Background
Two courts nobody was using
The Guadalajara scene exists because a few people decided to clean up a court instead of asking anyone’s permission.
December 2018
A group of Mexican and French pétanque enthusiasts started meeting on Monday and Thursday evenings. Sebastián Cecillón, now secretary of the national federation, was among them.
The court at Parque Monterrey had spent six or seven years as a sandbox for children and dogs.
Bringing it back
The group watered it, cleaned it and started playing on it regularly. A second metal-framed court was rescued from the Pablo Neruda pavilion at Unidad Revolución, where it had been converted into a planter.
That one was moved to Parque Monterrey after coordination with Providencia residents.
Growing outward
Two more courts went in at Jardines del Bosque in December 2022, built to the same dimensions with lighting and benches.
The city now has three sets of free public courts and an international OPEN, from a start of one neglected terrain.
Common questions
Questions about pétanque in Guadalajara
Where can I play pétanque in Guadalajara for free?
Parque Monterrey on Monday and Thursday evenings at 7pm, and Parque Ciudades Hermanas on Wednesdays at the same hour. Petanclub GDL runs all three and charges nothing.
There is no membership to join and no commitment expected. Turn up and say you are new.
Do I need my own boules?
No. The club lends sets to anyone arriving without equipment, which is how most of its regulars started.
If you decide to buy, our boule selector covers hand size and playing style, and the equipment page covers what competition play requires.
How many clubs does Guadalajara have?
Two on the federation’s 2026 registry: Petanca Providencia México with 14 players and Petanclub GDL with 13.
The wider Occidente region adds Club de Petanca Zapotlán in Ciudad Guzmán and Bolas Saladas in Puerto Vallarta, for 48 registered players across four clubs.
What is the Saturday session?
Training rather than social play. Petanclub GDL uses Saturday mornings at 9am at Parque Monterrey to work on technique.
It suits anyone who has played a few times and wants to get better. Our drills page covers the same ground between sessions.
Has Guadalajara hosted major tournaments?
Yes. The Abierto Charro de Petanca is one of Mexico’s five international OPEN tournaments, held each July and organized by Petanclub GDL.
The 2026 running was its fourth edition, played as free doubles.
How did the Parque Monterrey courts come about?
They had been sitting unused for six or seven years, reduced to a sandbox for children and dogs. Players who had started meeting in December 2018 watered them, cleaned them and brought them back.
A metal-framed court was also rescued from the Pablo Neruda pavilion at Unidad Revolución, where it had been turned into a planter, and moved to Parque Monterrey.
Is petanca the same as pétanque?
Yes. Petanca is the Spanish spelling and pétanque the French one, and the rules, boules and play are identical.
You will hear both used in Guadalajara, often in the same conversation.
When is the season?
Year-round. The only regular disruption is the rainy season from June through September, which affects afternoons more than the evening sessions.
Evening play at 7pm usually runs through it.
