Pétanque in Mérida

Four federated clubs, two academies and the only public school pétanque program in Mexico. The most developed scene in the country outside the capital.

Updated October 13, 2026

Mérida has four federated clubs and the most pétanque infrastructure of any city in Mexico outside the capital. The sport arrived here through a French community, then grew fast after 2020.

It is also the only Mexican city where you can play in a restaurant, on a university terrain and in a public park in the same week.

Four clubs in the city

Clubs and venues

Player counts come from the federation’s 2026 affiliation registry. Yucatán and the wider Sur region hold 58 of the 297 registered players nationally.

Federated clubs on the peninsula
ClubWherePlayersWhat it is
Patio PetancaCentro Histórico18Restaurant-bar with three courts in an open patio, two blocks from Parque de la Mejorada. Runs a tournament once a month
Club Mérida PetancaUniversidad Modelo17The city’s founding club, formed in 2020. Plays Mondays and Wednesdays on the ten-court university terrain
Club Petanca YucatánClub de Golf La Ceiba8Tuesday and Thursday evenings plus Sunday mornings, on Avenida La Ceiba north of the city
Ok Bak’teMérida4A small club playing Tuesday and Friday evenings
Luna de PlataMahahual, Quintana Roo11Not in Mérida but the nearest club on the peninsula, playing weekends 11am to 5pm

Affiliation decides who can enter sanctioned tournaments and nothing more. Patio Petanca takes walk-ins without any of it.

Terrain

Where to play

Four places to play in and around the city, from a free public installation to the ten-court university terrain.

Two venues often get run together, so worth separating. The Petancódromo is Club Mérida Petanca’s public park site, five courts in total counting the club’s original one.

Universidad Modelo is a separate, larger venue that the club moved its sessions to. Sources that merge the two are describing different places.

Schedules

A week of play

Four clubs and a restaurant between them cover most evenings. Times come from the clubs’ own federation listings.

Getting started

Learning here

Walk in at Patio Petanca

The lowest-effort start in the city. Roughly 100 pesos covers about three hours, boules included, and nobody expects you to know the rules.

Read the rules first if you want a head start, though the regulars will walk you through a game.

Join a club session

Club Mérida Petanca plays Mondays and Wednesdays at Universidad Modelo, and Club Petanca Yucatán runs Tuesday and Thursday evenings plus Sunday mornings.

Both are used to newcomers and neither asks for equipment on a first visit.

The academies

Academia Zeus at La Ceiba and La Ciotat in Gran Santa Fe are the two federation-affiliated academies here. Both take young players and both are run by certified technicians.

Mérida is the only Mexican city with two of them.

Buy your own set

Leisure boules are enough for club evenings and a competition set only matters once you enter sanctioned events. Our boule selector turns hand size and playing style into a specification.

What the rules require of a competition boule is on the equipment page.

The calendar

Tournaments

Mérida holds one of Mexico’s five international OPEN tournaments, and Patio Petanca runs a smaller one every month.

Open Mérida, February

An international doubles event at Universidad Modelo, in its fourth edition in 2026. Entry is through the organizing club, Club Petanca Mérida.

The 2026 field held 64 international teams and 16 Yucatecan ones, with Dylan Rocher among the players. Watching costs nothing.

Monthly at Patio Petanca

The restaurant runs its own tournament once a month, at a scale that suits club players and improving beginners.

The full national calendar is on the events page.

Background

How Mérida got here

Pétanque reached Yucatán through people, not through the federation. The structure came afterward.

A private French game

A French community in Mérida played privately for roughly ten years without forming anything. Nobody outside that circle had a way in.

That changed in 2020, when Club Mérida Petanca was formed in the first half of the year.

Building terrain

The club’s members funded the Petancódromo themselves in 2021, each putting in cash, with Eugenio Montalvo project-managing the build. Five public courts came out of it, lit with string lights.

Universidad Modelo followed in 2022, opening with six professional courts and growing to ten.

Onto the international calendar

Mérida hosted the Copa de las Américas and its first International Open in November 2022, drawing 80 teams from Canada, the United States, Paraguay, Chile, Peru and Mexico.

In January 2025 the city added something no other Mexican city had: pétanque inside a public secondary school, with 70 students.

Common questions

Questions about pétanque in Mérida

Patio Petanca in the Centro Histórico. It is a restaurant-bar with three courts, costs roughly 100 pesos for about three hours and needs no club membership.

Calle 57 #429, two blocks from Parque de la Mejorada, open Tuesday through Sunday evenings.

No, and the two get confused often. The Petancódromo is Club Mérida Petanca’s public park installation, 24 meters by 6, which sets up as four short courts or one regulation court.

Universidad Modelo is a separate and larger venue with ten courts, where the club now holds its Monday and Wednesday sessions and where the Open Mérida is played.

Ten. The venue opened with six professional courts in 2022 and grew from there, which makes it the largest pétanque installation on the Yucatán peninsula.

It is not the largest in Mexico. Rancho del Dragón near Ensenada has fourteen courts and Haz Hilo in León has twelve.

Club Mérida Petanca formed in the first half of 2020, with Eugenio Montalvo Etcharren among its founders and Javier de Zavala as its first president.

A French community in the city had been playing privately for about a decade before that, without any club structure around it.

Two federation-affiliated academies operate in the city. Academia Zeus runs at La Ceiba under Luis Ariel Correa, who coached Mexico’s first junior world championship team in 2025.

La Ciotat is the second, run by Daniel Mejía del Moral and Javier de Zavala Iturbide in the Gran Santa Fe neighborhood.

Yes, and it was a national first. The Centro de Desarrollo de la Petanca opened at Escuela Secundaria Número 13 in January 2025, in the Las Américas neighborhood.

Seventy secondary students took part at launch, making it the first public school in Mexico to put the sport into its official activities.

An international doubles tournament held at Universidad Modelo each February, on the federation’s national calendar. The 2026 running was its fourth edition.

It drew 64 teams from France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, the United States and Benin alongside 16 Yucatecan teams, with four-time world champion Dylan Rocher playing. Spectators get in free.

No. Sessions run in whatever mix of Spanish, French and English is at the terrain that evening.

The vocabulary that matters runs to about a dozen terms, collected in our glossary.

Year-round. The Yucatán climate supports outdoor play every month of the year.

May through October brings afternoon storms, though Patio Petanca’s covered seating handles the breaks. November through April is the strongest stretch for tournaments.
