1958
The oldest club in America
New England holds the beginning of organized pétanque in the United States, and an unbroken line from it to the present.
Worcester, 1958
Le Mistral Club de Pétanque was founded by French expatriates from the Armenian community of Marseilles, who had emigrated to central Massachusetts. Early play was at Green Hill Park.
The name comes from the cold wind that runs down the Rhône valley and hits Marseilles. The club described it as an ill wind that rips windows off hinges and sends roof tiles flying.
What they did
In 1966 a Le Mistral triplette beat teams from Trois-Rivières in Quebec to win one of the earliest tournaments held in North America.
Marcel Babayan was club president for forty years and played three world championships, and Albert Kallanian played seven.
Armenian members of the club dominated US teams to the Worlds between 1975 and 1987.
The line to today
Le Mistral became the Boston Petanque Club in 2009, and that in turn became Charlesgate Pétanque.
| Year | Club | Where | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1958 | Le Mistral Club de Pétanque | Worcester, MA | Founded by French expatriates from the Armenian community of Marseilles. The oldest pétanque club in the United States |
| 2009 | Boston Petanque Club | Boston, MA | Le Mistral evolved into it |
| Now | Charlesgate Pétanque | Boston, MA | Boston Petanque in turn became Charlesgate, whose boulodrome sits under an overpass in Back Bay |
A correction worth making. La Boule d’Or in San Francisco, founded 1959, is often called the first pétanque club in the United States, but Le Mistral predates it by a year.
La Boule d’Or’s own club page settles it, describing itself as the second oldest in the country and the first on the West Coast.
Free to play
Boston
Charlesgate Pétanque’s home is a public boulodrome in a park Frederick Law Olmsted designed, underneath a 1960s overpass. Bridge work has moved its games around the corner for now.
Where it is
The Charlesgate Boulodrome sits in Charlesgate Park on Commonwealth Avenue, between Charlesgate East and Charlesgate West, under the Bowker Overpass in Back Bay.
The park is part of Boston’s Emerald Necklace. The club describes its terrain as a semi-flat patch of fine packed gravel under a bridge.
Playing there
In normal times anyone can use the boulodrome free of charge while the park is open, from dawn to dusk. Large groups are asked to make contact first.
Since August 2025 the boulodrome area has been fenced off for work on the overpass, part of a rebuild due to finish in winter 2029.
The club calls itself an informal group and is not on the federation roster, which matters only for sanctioned competition.
Other Boston terrain
While the boulodrome is fenced off, the group meets behind the Leif Erikson statue on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall at Charlesgate East, around the corner. Games are on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon from April to November, announced each week on the club’s blog.
Further terrain exists at Perry Park in Somerville, Burns Park in Arlington and on the Rose Kennedy Greenway.
Since 1984
Maine
Maine Boules Club
Based in Blue Hill and playing at the Atlantic Boat Company, 355 Flye Point Road in Brooklin, from May to October. Tuesday and Friday at 1pm, Sunday at noon.
The club began playing in 1984 and has been FPUSA-affiliated since 1997, which puts it ahead of most current member clubs on both counts.
Public courts
Mill Park in Augusta, 1 Water St beside the dog park, has free public courts. Old Orchard Beach has municipal courts near the gazebo in Memorial Park, at 4 Heath St.
Both are open to anyone. Published schedules for the Augusta group disagree, so contact before relying on a time.
Augusta
The Mill Park story
The best-told pétanque story in the country is about a barber, a burned mill and a pile of salvage.
How it started
Fecteau, the town barber, and his wife Lucette played wherever they could find ground: under Memorial Bridge, on an old sand pile, in the dooryard of the Calumet Club.
He asked Augusta officials for a proper court in little-used Mill Park. At first, by his account, they had no idea what he was even talking about.
Building it
They signed off, and he spent a year fundraising door to door until, as he put it, he had calluses on his knuckles.
The granite blocks lining the court are sidewalk scrap from public works, and the stone benches are cut from the mill foundation.
The lamppost lighting evening play was salvaged from a store parking lot after a plow hit it.
What was there before
The site is where the Edwards cotton mill, which once employed thousands of Franco-American immigrants, burned down twenty years earlier. His line about it: the mill’s still here, it’s just buried under our court.
Games were underway by 2011. A plaque lists more than 120 donors, many of whom grew up in Sand Hill, the historically French-speaking neighborhood across the street.
Since then
Marco Foyot, a world champion and multiple French champion, gave a clinic at Mill Park in October 2022. Local tourism has filmed a tour of the facilities.
Fecteau’s own summary of the point of it: he is not interested in the game being French or not, he just wants people playing.
Two leagues
Cape Cod
Harwich
Two dedicated pétanque courts in Brooks Park, playing Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 3pm from April to November.
Free, and open to anyone who turns up.
Chatham
A dedicated court in Chase Park, playing Thursdays at 3pm. Both leagues share a contact.
Between them they make the Cape the most consistently scheduled pétanque in Massachusetts outside Boston.
An honest gap
The rest of New England
Four of the six New England states have nothing, and it is worth saying so plainly.
What is not there
Vermont, New Hampshire and Rhode Island have no club on the federation roster and no entry in any current directory. The listings for all three are empty placeholders.
Connecticut has one defunct entry: a terrain at an inn in Old Lyme. The inn closed, and in 2020 the property was sold to become an environmental education center.
What that means
New England pétanque is a Massachusetts and Maine story, and the map is smaller than the region’s history suggests.
If you are in one of the four, the nearest regular play is Boston or the Cape. Our United States page covers clubs in the rest of the country.
Common questions
Questions about pétanque in New England
Which is the oldest pétanque club in the United States?
Le Mistral Club de Pétanque, founded in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1958 by French expatriates from the Armenian community of Marseilles.
It predates La Boule d’Or in San Francisco by a year, and La Boule d’Or’s own club page describes itself as the second oldest.
Does Le Mistral still exist?
Not under that name. It became the Boston Petanque Club in 2009, and that in turn became Charlesgate Pétanque.
So the club that started in Worcester in 1958 has a direct line to the group playing in Back Bay today.
Where can I play pétanque in Boston?
Charlesgate Pétanque meets behind the Leif Erikson statue on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall at Charlesgate East, in Back Bay, on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon from April to November. Game times are posted each week on the club’s blog.
Its home boulodrome, under the Bowker Overpass in Charlesgate Park, has been fenced off for bridge repairs since August 2025. Play is free, and there are spare boules for newcomers.
What kind of terrain is it?
The club’s own description of its boulodrome is a semi-flat patch of fine packed gravel under a bridge. Charlesgate Park is part of Boston’s Emerald Necklace, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted.
While the boulodrome is fenced off, games are on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall, behind the Leif Erikson statue.
Where can I play in Maine?
Maine Boules Club plays at the Atlantic Boat Company, 355 Flye Point Road in Brooklin, from May to October. Tuesday and Friday at 1pm and Sunday at noon.

How old is the Maine club?
It began playing in 1984 and has been affiliated with FPUSA since 1997, which makes it one of the longest continuously playing groups in the country.
It calls itself the oldest and largest pétanque club in Maine.
What is the story behind the Augusta courts?
The town barber, Fecteau, and his wife Lucette played wherever they could and eventually asked the city for a proper court in little-used Mill Park.
The site was where the Edwards cotton mill, once employer of thousands of Franco-American immigrants, had burned down twenty years earlier.
What is the court made of?
Salvage, mostly. The granite blocks lining it are sidewalk scrap donated by public works, the lamppost that lights evening play came out of a store parking lot after a plow hit it, and the stone benches are cut from the mill foundation.
A plaque lists more than 120 donors, many of whom grew up in Sand Hill, the historically French-speaking neighborhood across the street.
Is there pétanque in Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island or Connecticut?
No. None of the four has a club on the federation roster or in any current directory.
Connecticut had one terrain at an inn in Old Lyme, and the inn closed. New England pétanque is a Massachusetts and Maine story.
