Pétanque in Texas
Five clubs across four metros, with Austin holding the most play and the longest history. One club runs weekly games on the lawn of a state historic site.
Five pétanque groups across four Texas metros, three of them on the federation roster. Austin has the most play and the deepest history.
Austin’s oldest club has gone quiet, and its old schedule page is still live, which catches people out.

Five clubs
The five clubs
Three sit on the FPUSA Central roster and two are independent, which affects sanctioned tournament entry and nothing else.
| Club | Where | Status | Cost | Venue and notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Legation Boules Club | Austin | Independent | $20 a year, free to turn up | Organizes the Wednesday games at the French Legation and lists the Browning Hangar at Mueller and Nelson Ranch Park. Formed July 2014 |
| Nelson Ranch Pétanque Club | Cedar Park | FPUSA | $35 a year, $15 junior or associate | Founded 2015. Nelson Ranch Park, 905 Nelson Ranch Rd, plus Friday evenings at the Mueller Hangar |
| Dallas Pétanque Club | Farmers Branch | FPUSA | Not published | Gussie Field Watterworth Park, 2600 Valley View Ln. Sundays at 1:30pm year-round |
| San Antonio Pétanque Club | San Antonio | FPUSA | Not published | Founded 2002 by Dr Fernando Triana. Members play weekly at a private terrain |
| El Paso Pétanque Club | El Paso | Independent | Free | Rim Road near upper Tom Lea Park, most Saturdays and Sundays from about 9am. Confirm before going |
Two Austin clubs, one park. Nelson Ranch Pétanque Club is the FPUSA member in the Austin area, while Legation Boules Club is larger and says openly that it is not affiliated with any association.
Both list Nelson Ranch Park as a venue, which is why listings often merge them.
Three venues
Austin
Play runs at three sites in and around the city, and the state’s heritage agency actively promotes one of them.
The French Legation
Legation Boules plays Wednesday mornings on the grounds of the French Legation State Historic Site. The Texas Historical Commission promotes the sessions and has hosted the club’s fundraising tournament there.
Few state historic sites anywhere carry a weekly pétanque game on the lawn.
The Browning Hangar
Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons at 4550 Mueller Blvd, in the old airport hangar at Mueller. The FPUSA Nationals were played here in 2019.
Nelson Ranch Pétanque Club lists Fridays from 6pm. Legation Boules lists players arriving from about 3pm on Fridays and Sundays and playing until dark.
Nelson Ranch Park
905 Nelson Ranch Rd in Cedar Park, Tuesday and Sunday mornings. Play starts at 9am from March to October and 10am from November to February.
Both Austin clubs list it, and the federation-affiliated one is based there.
What it costs
Legation Boules charges $20 a year and says outright that showing up costs nothing. Nelson Ranch charges $35 a year, which includes the FPUSA license. Both clubs lend boules and teach beginners for free.
The rules take about five minutes to learn.
Across the state
Where the courts are
Six places with courts, from a state historic site to a public pocket park.
| Venue | Where | When | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| French Legation State Historic Site | Austin | Wednesday mornings | The Texas Historical Commission promotes the sessions on the grounds. Pétanque here goes back to 1999 |
| Browning Hangar, Mueller | Austin | Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons | 4550 Mueller Blvd. Hosted the FPUSA Nationals in 2019 |
| Paggi Square, Mueller | Austin | Open access | A public granite court at 2101 Robert Browning St, designed for pétanque and opened in June 2013 |
| Nelson Ranch Park | Cedar Park | Tuesday and Sunday mornings | 9am March to October, 10am November to February |
| Gussie Field Watterworth Park | Farmers Branch | Sundays 1:30pm | The court was built through the City of Farmers Branch |
| Carpenter Park Recreation Center | Plano | Occasional Wednesdays around 6pm | A second Dallas-area group |
Paggi Square is the one to know if you just want a court with nobody else involved. It is public and open.
A caution
The Heart of Texas question
Austin’s oldest club still has a website listing four playing days a week. The evidence says it stopped.
What it was
Arsene Dupin, a Paris-born magician and the resident magician at One World Theater, founded Heart of Texas Pétanque Club on May 21, 2008, after finding a few players at the French Legation.
It grew to 45 federation members, which made it one of the larger clubs in the country at the time, and it hosted the FPUSA Nationals in Austin in 2019.
Its best day
In October 2013 the club hosted Marco Foyot, a multiple French champion, on a visit covered by the Austin American-Statesman.
That is a serious booking for a club in its sixth year.
Where it stands
Its site has not posted since February 2019, it is absent from the federation roster and a neutral Austin scene site listing where people play does not mention it.
Its schedule page is still live and still lists Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday games. Do not plan around those times without contacting someone first.
Common questions
Questions about pétanque in Texas
Where can I play pétanque in Austin?
Three venues. Legation Boules Club plays the French Legation on Wednesday mornings. The Browning Hangar at Mueller draws the most players on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons, and Nelson Ranch Park in Cedar Park has games on Tuesday and Sunday mornings.
Turning up costs nothing and Legation Boules membership is $20 a year. Day-to-day coordination runs through a Signal group.
Is there a public court in Austin?
Yes. Paggi Square in the Mueller district, 2101 Robert Browning St, is a pocket park with a granite court designed for pétanque.
It opened in June 2013, and the Heart of Texas club advised on the design.
Which Austin club is in the federation?
Nelson Ranch Pétanque Club in Cedar Park, founded 2015. It is the only Austin-area club on the FPUSA Central roster.
Legation Boules Club is larger and states plainly that it is not affiliated with any pétanque association. The two share Nelson Ranch Park, which is where the confusion usually starts.
What happened to Heart of Texas Pétanque Club?
It was founded on May 21, 2008, by Arsene Dupin, a Paris-born magician, and was once the largest club in the state with 45 federation members. It hosted the FPUSA Nationals in Austin in 2019.
Its website has not posted since February 2019 and it is off the federation roster. The old schedule page is still live, so treat any times on it with care.
Where can I play in Dallas?
Dallas Pétanque Club at Gussie Field Watterworth Park, 2600 Valley View Ln in Farmers Branch, Sundays at 1:30pm year-round.
A second group plays occasional Wednesdays around 6pm at the Carpenter Park Recreation Center in Plano.
What is the story of the San Antonio club?
Dr Fernando Triana, a cardiologist, learned the game traveling through Europe as a teenager and built courts in his San Antonio back yard.
He founded the club in 2002 with family and neighbors, and for years it met most Sundays in that yard. The federation now lists it as playing weekly at a private terrain.
Is there a tournament in Texas?
The Jean Lafont Mémorial, run by Dallas Pétanque Club, reached its twelfth running in June 2025.
Austin hosted the FPUSA Nationals at the Browning Hangar in 2019, and Legation Boules runs a fundraising tournament on the French Legation grounds. The national calendar is on our events page.
Is there pétanque in Houston?
No club. The Houston Pétanque Club existed in the late 2000s and is now listed as dead.
A restaurant on Richmond Avenue has been reported to have courts among its lawn games, but nothing confirms that is still the case.
How far back does pétanque go in Austin?
Further than the clubs suggest. Jerome Potts moved to Austin from Pau in 1991 and joined the Alliance Française in 1997, taking over games from Didier Jumeau.
In the fall of 1999 he arranged monthly Sunday play on the French Legation grounds. Attendance ran six to ten people until 2001, when Julia Bower started bringing bread, cheese and wine.
